A Saraswati veena has seven strings — four main playing strings and three tala (rhythm/drone) strings — and none of them are tuned to a fixed frequency. Like all Carnatic classical instruments, the veena is tuned around a movable Sa (tonic) chosen by the performer, with every other string set relative to it.
